We will be with our fellow third graders in the pod for this party. Our parent coordinators are planning all of the activities and food. If you have some ideas or just want to help out, please let our parent coordinator know, Carrie Cotter.

Everyone is welcome to come to our celebration on this day. We will share our reports and projects with the class on Friday afternoon. Remember this is a minimum of a 3 point project, with quality work - not quantity. In class we talk every day about the project, and what I expect (neatness, board games with written directions and complete pieces/parts, neat presentations, facts that teach us about the topic on each and every type of project, etc.) Without neatness, thoughtfulness, and well written facts, kids may not earn all of the points. Kids have been given about 45 minutes each day in school since last week Wednesday to work on the projects here.

Next week Tuesday, May 24th from 9:30 - 11:00 we will have a Chicago History Exhibit in the Commons. This week was our final science time together, and we discovered that the pollination we did with bees last week worked! We transferred pollen from flower to flower, and then the pollen should have gone from the stamen to the pistil on the flower, which in turn travels down the stamen to fertilize the ovuals, and create seeds. We can see the seeds on our plants now! The first one will be due on Sept. 30th. They are welcome to turn in projects sooner, if they like. The Reader's Response is a great way to encourage our peers in the classroom to try new books, and they let the teacher know that your child is reading regularly and comprehending what they read at home.

The Reader's Response is to be completed at home. No time will be offered to kids to complete the project in the classroom. If you need some materials to complete a project, please let me know and I'll see what I can find here at school for your child.

Some project ideas for a Reader's Response are:

1. make a book box (diorama)
2. write an acrostic poem for the title of the book that describes the story
3. write a play and act it out in class either with friends or with puppets
4. create a 6 frame comic strip explaining a part of the story with words and pictures
5. design a quilt that explains the story
6. paint a mural that explains a part of the story
7. write a book report
8. write a few diary entries for the main character
9. make a board game that directly connects to the story with written directions on how to play the game
10. make a book jacket
11. write a newspaper to go along with your book
12. design a postcard and write a short letter to a friend describing the book

The sky's the limit with these projects. You can do just about anything. If you are not sure if a project will be approved, just have your kid ask!

Birthday Celebrations

At Beye School, we advocate healthy lifestyle choices to our children. Birthday treats/celebrations should happen typically at the end of the school day, approximately 15-20 minutes before the bell rings. Please let me know with and email or note that your child will be passing out a treat before it happens, so that I can plan my lessons and day for such. Some alternatives to the cupcake are: play a game with the class, a quick craft activity, pass out a pencil/eraser/small toy, read your child's favorite story to the class, etc.

Some healthier treats to pass out might be fresh fruit, cheese and crackers, a yogurt sundae bar, popcorn, chips and guacamole, etc.
