Reader's Response

At the end of each month each student is asked to create a Reader's Response.
This is a project that they create based on the book(s) they read at home and record on their Reading Record. The first one will be due on Sept. 30th. They are welcome to turn in projects sooner, if they like. The Reader's Response is a great way to encourage our peers in the classroom to try new books, and they let the teacher know that your child is reading regularly and comprehending what they read at home.

The Reader's Response is to be completed at home. No time will be offered to kids to complete the project in the classroom. If you need some materials to complete a project, please let me know and I'll see what I can find here at school for your child.

Some project ideas for a Reader's Response are:

1. make a book box (diorama)
2. write an acrostic poem for the title of the book that describes the story
3. write a play and act it out in class either with friends or with puppets
4. create a 6 frame comic strip explaining a part of the story with words and pictures
5. design a quilt that explains the story
6. paint a mural that explains a part of the story
7. write a book report
8. write a few diary entries for the main character
9. make a board game that directly connects to the story with written directions on how to play the game
10. make a book jacket
11. write a newspaper to go along with your book
12. design a postcard and write a short letter to a friend describing the book

The sky's the limit with these projects. You can do just about anything. If you are not sure if a project will be approved, just have your kid ask!

Birthday Celebrations

At Beye School, we advocate healthy lifestyle choices to our children. Birthday treats/celebrations should happen typically at the end of the school day, approximately 15-20 minutes before the bell rings. Please let me know with and email or note that your child will be passing out a treat before it happens, so that I can plan my lessons and day for such. Some alternatives to the cupcake are: play a game with the class, a quick craft activity, pass out a pencil/eraser/small toy, read your child's favorite story to the class, etc.

Some healthier treats to pass out might be fresh fruit, cheese and crackers, a yogurt sundae bar, popcorn, chips and guacamole, etc.
